I'm hoping somebody can clear this up for me, but I think my Corsa '04 gearbox might have had it. I was waiting at a set of lights on a roundabout at the start of a bypass. My foot slipped off the clutch as a moved off and the wheels spun a hell of a lot and I heard a clunck under the car when I went into 2nd gear. As I went onto the bypass I noticed that all was not well with the gears, noticably 4th to start with but then 2nd.
I put the gearstick into the 4th potition and the car just revved and revved, as if there wasnt a 4th gear at all. Then I was able to move the gearstick freely from 2nd and 4th positions without goin into neutral first.
By this point it had also decided I had an imaginary 6th gear, directly next to where 4th was, but I had never been able to put the gearstick in that position before. The car has now decided it has a 2nd and 4th again, but it doesnt feel right when I change gear and I can still move the gearstick into where 6th would be if it had 6 gears.
It also still moves into reverse as normal. I phoned the dealership who sold me the car and explained what had happened and I was told that although the man I spoke to just sold the cars, it sounded like the gearbox had given up to him. Fortunately for me this is protected by my extended warranty So basically my question is this, what if anything could have caused this to happen, and has anybody else had this problem before and what did it turn out to be?
Sounds like the gear linkage. It joins the stick to the gearbox. I had my gear linkage replaced at the start of the summer because the gearstick was putting up a hell of a fight when i tried putting it into 1st, then as time went on 2nd and reverse also. It certainly doesnt feel like that because this time the gearstick wasnt putting up a fight, it was doing its part.
It felt like i had a box full of neutrals at 1 point, which I'm sure you can appreciate was pretty frightening considering I was in the overtaking lane on the bypass. Well sadly I think I'm resigned to the fact it might be a linkage problem again because somebody suggested that on another forum as well.
It only moved straight from 2nd to 4th on the bypass, after I stopped in a car park and had a look under the bonnet for anything obvious it now has to go back into neutral before another gear is selected, the only obvious damage to it while I was driving it to the garage was the fact it still happily goes from 5th to where a 6th gear would be I sincerely hope its the gearbox cos I could really do without forking out for yet another linkage.

I found using just the spring loaded button and gear lever alignment holes the result was the 1st gear gate was a little too far to the right leaving it possible to engage reverse accidentally when going for first. It's relatively easy to fix but might be a little daunting first time. The mechanism did cost around a hundred pounds and would take around half an hour to fit - if you were used to fitting them a little longer for the Z13DT engine. This is a basic summary of the operation: 1 You will need to get underneath the vehicle to undo the clamp bolt on the linkage a Torx bolt. You must push the spring loaded clip fully in before the pin can be pushed out a small screwdriver under the head of the pin is useful here.
You will need to lever four lugs open to remove this clip and it can be awkward. You get a new in the kit so don't worry about breaking it. Line it up with the shaft from the gearstick so it can slide in and out and attach the other part of the linkage to the gearbox with the roll pin. Fit the new plastic retainer. You are now ready to synchronise the linkage. Pull up the cover, or gaitor, from around the gearstick. Looking down, you will see a plastic guide, with a 5mm hole in, as you move the gearshift into the reverse position.
Line up the hole in the guide with the one on the gearshift and lock them together with a punch or drill bit. Next, look at the gearbox itself and, on the top, you will see where the gear selector shaft comes out of the box. Close to this will be a small, plastic spring loaded button.
Grab the selector shaft and turn it fully in the direction of reverse gear imagine selecting reverse with the stick. Press the little button in and it should travel a fair way before locking the selector.
If you're not sure, turn the selector the opposite way and you'll find the button won't go in as far. When the button has locked it in position, tighten the Torx bolt on the shaft underneath the vehicle. Remove the punch from the gearstick, pull up the reverse release catch on the stick and you should find it correctly synchronised.

Sorry, someone else will be along soon. If the only problem is selecting gears is like stirring soup, and you can select all the gears, it doesn't jump out of gear, and knees don't prevent the gears being selected - then it doesn't really need repair if you're happy to put up with the stirring soup feeling.

There's plenty of bits in there to potentially go wrong, so it really depends which one and how easy it is to get at. Sometimes you can just lift the gearshift boot and get to it. The above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
