Introducing the Audi e-tron S Sportbacka nearly horsepower four-door coupe body style crossover serving as a sexier alternative to the more conventionally styled e-tron S SUV. If you don't require the extra cargo space out back and can also sacrifice a bit of rear-seat headroom, then the Sportback is for you. However, it does cost a bit more but, then again, none of Audi's all-electric e-tron models come cheap.
Like its e-tron S counterpart, the e-tron S Sportback features a segment-first: triple electric motors. Not only does this allow for plenty of power, but aids in overall driving dynamics and handling. Combined with plenty of luxury, outstanding build quality typical of the brand, and the latest in connectivity and driver-assist technologies, the e-tron S Sportback will have zero problems finding buyers. One of the first things you might notice about the new e-tron S Sportback in these photos is the lack of conventional side mirrors.
That's because they're only standard. Buyers can opt instead for virtual exterior mirror cameras that send images of what's happening to interior display screens. Not only is this cool but helps to improve drag coefficients. Other aerodynamic-minded design points include flow-optimized wheel arch extensions and a controllable cooling-air inlet to help cool the front brakes.
Compared to the standard e-tron Sportback, the S variant has widened wheel arches that give it a bolder appearance while helping to achieve a drag coefficient of just 0. Additional unique styling elements include more aggressive front and rear bumpers and a rear diffuser than stretches nearly the entire width of the body.
There's also some silver trim at both front and rear as well as aluminum exterior mirror caps. A set of inch wheels come standard with optional inch and - starting later next year - inch wheels. Audi's Matrix LED headlights are another option. The overall interior design is nearly identical to that of the standard e-tron Sportback, but Audi specifically went with darker colors in the S version.
A few standard features include electrically-adjustable sport seats covered in leather and Alcantara, aluminum trim elements with optional carbonand ambient lighting. The all-digital MMI touchscreen system featuring two large displays is another familiar sight. Combined with the optional head-up display, numerous online services, and a navigation system, they make up the virtual cockpit that's largely free of conventional buttons and knobs.
Expect overall build quality and fit and finish to be outstanding.
2021 Audi e-tron S And e-tron S Sportback Debut With 496 HP
The e-tron S Sportback sacrifices interior volume for more aggressive exterior styling. Rear seat passengers lose some headroom and there's less cargo space available behind that seat. Such is the price of style.
The e-tron S Sportback is the latest all-electric vehicle to join Audi's lineup but along with the e-tron S SUV, is also the first series-production vehicle ever to have three electric motors. Two power the rear axle and the third powers the front. However, only the rear motors are engaged during normal driving; the front motor is only activated when additional performance or additional traction is required.
Those rear motors send torque directly to each wheel through a single-speed transmission; there's no need for a mechanical differential. And speaking of power, the e-tron S Sportback has a total of horsepower and lb-ft of torque.
Going from 0 to 62 mph requires just 4. Official EPA testing has yet to happen. And for those who enjoy some drifting from time to time, simply set the ESC stabilization control to "Sport" mode and the drive select dynamic handling system to "Dynamic" mode.
In case of rocks or other objects on the ground, ride height can be adjusted by up to three inches.Audi's answer to the burgeoning breed of all-electric crossovers isn't as stylish as the Jaguar I-Pace or as innovative as the Tesla Model X. Instead, the Audi e-tron is intended to magnify the advantages of EVs in a more traditional package that exemplifies the company's luxury pedigree. With standard all-wheel drive and a pound towing capacity, the two-row crossover has the capability many SUV shoppers expect.
While its plus-mile range isn't groundbreaking, Audi thinks that's more than enough for most daily commutes. A sumptuous interior fitted with state-of-the-art technology further proves that the e-tron is more interested in making the EV segment more desirable rather than advancing it. While Audi has only announced updates for the European e-tronthe company said those changes will eventually make their way to our market.
That means the American version will have an updated battery pack that provides more driving range than it currently does. It also means we're getting the e-tron Sportback that features a fastback roofline. Despite its higher starting price, we think the Prestige model is the e-tron to own.
It has better standard features than the base model that include a head-up display, massaging front seats, nicer leather upholstery, and power door closers.
It also has adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. We'd also add the Tow package to utilize its pound maximum capacity.Top 10 All-New Electric Cars on Roads in 2020
Likewise, we'd choose the Cold Weather package, which brings heated rear seats and adaptive windshield wipers with heated washer jets. Beneath the e-tron's heavily creased bodywork is a Together they provide electronic all-wheel drive, but the rear motor does most of the work.
In regular driving situations, they make a combined horsepower and lb-ft of torque. However, putting the transmission in Sport mode briefly unlocks ponies and lb-ft.
Our initial driving impressions revealed that the e-tron was swift and composed. Its snappy acceleration is typical of electric vehicles, and the smooth and quiet ride quality asserted its luxury pretenses. Its stopping system expertly blended its traditional brakes with the obligatory regenerative brakes. The e-tron is also capable of towing up to pounds when properly equipped.
The e-tron features a However, we believe Audi is updating the battery for to extract more driving range. Based on information about the updated European version, we expect the e-tron will have a range of roughly miles. Otherwise, it will still be compatible with Those using a more conventional volt outlet will be able to fully charge the e-tron in about nine hours. The EPA estimates the e-tron has a driving range of miles; however, we expect that number to slightly increase for The government also expects it will get 74 MPGe in the city, and 73 on the highway.
2021 Audi e-tron S Sportback
The model we tested on our real-world highway route achieved 67 MPGe, which was only 1 mpg worse than its rating and 3 mpg better than the I-Pace earned.
We haven't tested a Model X. The e-tron's most impressive technology is its electrified systems, but the five-seat crossover also has a cutting-edge and practical cabin. Its dashboard is packed with multiple high-resolution screens that include Audi's digital gauge cluster—called Virtual Cockpit—and two flush-mounted touchscreens in the center. Of course, there are a variety of upscale options such as a head-up display and massaging front seats to further round out the e-tron's sophisticated interior, which benefits from a flat floor thanks to its neatly packaged underfloor battery pack.Follow us on.
New S variants powered by three electric motors with a combined peak output of hp and Nm of torque; claimed range of up to km. The e-tron S and S Sportback use three electric motors for propulsion. Two are mounted on the rear axle and one sits at the front.
The result is hp and a stout Nm of torque, although these peak figures are available for only 8 second boost periods. The cars dispatch kph in 4. In normal driving modes, just the rear motors operate and torque is sent to each wheel via a single-speed transmission.

In dynamic driving modes or when full power is requested, the front motor activates. It can also predictively activate when slip is detected and decelerate the inside front wheel on a bend to prevent traction losses.
That's around 80km less than the most range-efficient e-tron 55 models. Aerodynamic revisions for the S variants include airflow-optimised wheel-arch extensions, which contribute to a drag coefficient of just 0.
The new wheel-arch extensions add about 50mm to the width of both cars, while unique front and rear bumpers enhance the sporty look. Silver detailing and aluminium mirrors housing, along with inch or inch wheel options, mark the models out as the S variants.
The interior brings electrically adjustable sports seats trimmed in fine nappa leather, with the option of carbon trim inserts throughout. The ride height can be varied by up to 76mm depending on driving situation or mode, and progressive steering can increase directness. The brakes are also uprated to six-piston calipers at the front.
While there is no word on these new performance oriented S variants, the standard e-tron SUV is India-bound, likely in Audi previously showcased the standard e-tron in India last year. Audi e-tron S Audi e-tron S Sportback.

The next generation of Quattro arrives with the yet-to-be-revealed Audi e-tron S Sportbackwhich has three electric motors instead of two. Audi's new Quattro system for the new S variant of e-tron requires shuffling the regular e-tron 's motors around. Essentially, the e-tron's motors switch places in the S version. The standard e-tron's hp rear motor moves to the S model's front end. The regular e-tron's hp front motor moves to the rear end and is joined by an identical motor.
Instead of a rear differential, the difference in wheel speed is managed by the two electric motors in the rear end. Each rear motor turns an individual wheel, which allows for them to mimic the characteristics of any type of differential, including a torque-vectoring differential.
Total power comes in at a healthy horsepower and lb-ft for up to 8. That's a gain of 94 and over the standard e-tron and is good for a claimed 60 time of 4. Torque vectoring is a pivotal [ Ahem—Ed. This creates a steering effect on the rear axle, increasing yaw to help a car rotate through a corner. In aggressive cornering, the outside rear motor can deliver up to lb-ft more torque than the inside wheel. Audi claims the system reacts in a quarter of the time it would take a mechanical system to respond.
During the brief encounter with the new system in e-tron S Sportback prototypes, it worked extremely well. Much of our time on Audi's short handling course was spent sideways in a lurid drift. We're not quite sure what world Audi lives in where electric SUV hunchback things must drift, but it's a world that we'd like to live in. LOWS: The regular e-tron weighs nearly pounds, this may be heavier; plans for the States are still to be determined.
The e-tron S Sportback's extra power and trick Quattro system helps it to execute massive, smoky, winter tire-shredding drifts with precision. Drive it less like Ken Block, and the system works to ensure that the appropriate wheel lacks traction.
Since the rear motors work independently, they can power one wheel without affecting the other. If one wheel is on ice and the other on pavement, only the motor with traction will provide the driving force.
In the front axle, the motor works through an open differential and relies on the brakes to mimic a limited-slip diff, ensuring the front axle can help even in the worst conditions. Even if you're not Ken Block, there are advantages to the new Quattro system.
In slippery conditions, there's a feeling of effortless acceleration. Despite weighing around pounds, the e-tron S has the responsiveness and handling chops of a lighter vehicle. Running the e-tron S through a slalom course proved that this elephant can dance. Other changes relative to the e-tron include software tweaks that utilize more of the battery. While the battery's storage capacity remains at This three-motor setup makes us think that four-motor configurations are on the horizon.
How the e-tron's third motor might affect range isn't being revealed, and Audi does not even have a definitive timeline for the S Sportback to arrive in the United States.
