When I was a little boy, growing up in South Jersey, the one toy that I really wanted the most was a remote controlled airplane.

I grew up with a father who was a pilot, and frequently had the chance to go up in the plane with him. I always had several RC cars as a child, but there was something about controlling an airplane, flying in the skies above, using a remote control on the ground. Even today, whenever I have the chance to be around or take part in controlling RC airplanes, I still get that warm fuzzy feeling that I remember as a child. A single mistake on the part of the pilot, could mean the total destruction of that very expensive toy.

In fact, you can even make your own! Thanks to 3D Printing, and the ability to design and fabricate objects of your liking, as long as they are made of particular plastics, my son will be able to one day create his very own, custom RC airplane. Thanks to a man named Kiril Lange, anyone with access to a 3D printer can print out their own, already modeled airplane, and best of all, the design files are totally free.

Of course, the airplane can not be flown directly off of the printer, as there will be further assembly required and a good deal of skill needed.

Other than the 3D printed parts, there will be about four dozen other parts needed as well, including:. He also suggests using rafts when printing all of the pieces, as this will better ensure that they print with the correct surface texture and shape. Once everything is printed out, construction of the model consists of assembling the body of the plane, including trimming a portion of the basswood.

You Can Now 3D Print Your Own RC Airplane

Once this is complete, the servos must be inserted into their respective brackets on the body of the plane. Lange recommends inserting the servos from the inside, starting from the back first. Once complete, the tail flaps will need to be sanded down so that they can rotate easily within their holes. Many more steps follow, including the attachment of the wing servos, assembly of the landing gear, and the addition of the electronics. Be sure to see all of the instructions here.

Once complete, the RC airplane is ready for flight. What do you think? Upcoming Events External Events.I would like to share my attempt at 3d designing and printing my own rc airplane. At first I purchased some of 3Dlabprint www. After trying them I started on my own.

I will tell you I have never stick built an rc plane so I did not have the background to figure out things like wing profiles. I started off by figuring out what airplane I would like to do. There were so many that I liked that it made the decision tough. I went from SR71 blackbirds all the way thru F tomcats, but in the end I started with a simpler design.

I choose a simple delta wing Miragewith the thought that it would be would be the best bet for the first attempt. Spoiler alert, after many months of designing in a 3d cad program and printing it, I did get the chance to maiden it, but the first attempt was unsuccessful and the second attempt the actual flight was very very short.

There are videos at the end, but I cut it off as soon as it left the ground as the ground came back just as fast as it took off. Lesson learned, recalculate CoG center of gravity before you just give it a try.

More on that later! This instructable is written as if the reader has experience in building RC airplanes, so I will not be going over how to set up the radio or setting throws.

This is an intro on how to start 3d modeling and printing your own RC aircraft. The reading is brief, but there are a lot of pictures. Choose a model that you like. There are plenty of resources on the web to aid in this. Also make sure that it is not the most complicated design as that will discourage someone that is new to this. If you decide that you would rather start with a base 3d model and edit it, there are a lot of websites that you can download models from.

Some free and some cost. Please keep in mind that not all models may be used. Some have special licenses that allow or deny you to edit and use the models. Some you may have to attribute the original maker of the model, and some may be a royalty free license allowing you to edit and resell if it is not the same format as the original.

On the other hand if you would like to start from the ground up, you will need to find 3 good profiles of the plane. Also you will need a lot of pictures of the plane from various angles to be able to model the finer details. Choose the 3d modeling program you would like to use or you are familiar with. If you have not used any modeling software in the past then you will have to spend some time getting familiar with how the software works.

There is a ton of software out there to use. Again, some free, some not, and some unbelievable expensive.

3d print rc plane

I have found that even some of the expensive software can be bought on a time license cheaper than normal. I myself like Solidworks but it is very expensive and it is more in-depth than what is needed to model this project.

I chose solidworks because I was able to buy it at a huge discount. Keep in mind this is my preference, if I would have started out with free software I would have stuck with that software.

There are plenty of resources on the web that have tutorials to help you learn it. Sometimes, Youtube is a wonderful place to start for this. On this model I decided to use an existing model and modify it. So I will go thru the step of this method for now. I decided to print that out first and see how the model was.

It did take some time but it also gave me some insight as to what had to be changed to make it work for my project. If you are heading this way understand that not all 3d models can be edited using any 3d modeling software. Not a member?

I helped my friend Ben out with his university project by printing parts for me. He had a glider he crashed. He's seen the plane and wants to return the favor.

I think you can see where this is going Getting there! Each wing section in the picture there takes about 8 hours to print, and the body parts vary from 3 - 8 hours each. I'm printing each part carefully one by one very slow for best results.

One roll of Diamond PLA and a generous sample of banana yellow from diamondage. I plan to print it in transparent plastic with yellow control surfaces. When the filament arrives in the mail I will start printing. I may or may not buy RC gear to put in it as it can be pricey. More updates to follow! View all 3 project logs. Ever wondered, how reliable are fully 3D printed planes in real? Recently I decided to decomission…. Simon Briggs. I used the included slicer settings and have to tweak it to get it right, I recommend using the included Gcode files, if you can, I had to figure out the Z axis compensation for my ROBO 3D but once I knew the trick I just printed the STLs and fine tuned it during print. If anything the fuse is a little 'squishy' behind the cockpit so I added some 1mm carbon rod bracing and it stiffened up nicely.

Love my new plane. I just downloaded the mustang last night. I had to get the S3D to make it work the way it was designed. The cool factor of having all the internal architecture within the wing and fuse sold me.

Looks like art work! I love the challenge of printing this aircraft. Way more satisfying than buying it from china! Lower case "c" intended Some really rare edf jets would be nice. This design style just seems to be custom catered for things like a Mig or a curvy SR We all printed this thing because we could. Not because it was practical. I don't know about you guys, but I have a basement full of impractical things and my printer is one of them.

I spend hours printing things I could easily buy from the dollar store. That EFX is one of my favorite speed planes and is blistering fast with my rare bear motor in it. But I have more satisfaction with this P and I haven't even flown it yet. Because no one else in my area has one!I have designed this plane from scratch using the software Catia. This plane was specificly designed for 3D printing, which means that it is very light about grams without electronics. There are. To build this plane, you will need a 3D printer, some skills with building RC models, and a lot of time, but it is worth it.

You don't have to do this, it is already done. It just for you to imagine how this plane was created. There is also an idea how to box this plane when you need to travel with this plane. You wil need a huge box I guess this one is from some graphic plotter. Question 2 years ago. Reply 3 years ago. Reply 4 years ago. The frame is pretty stiff, it handles hard landings very well. Also this crash is not so serious, only front of the plane was damaged, so it was quite easy repairing.

If you felt inclined, separating the photos out into multiple steps with a bit of text in each to cover the construction processes involved, that would be so awesome!! Yes, you are right. This is my first instructable, so I am just getting into it. I will separate them to steps. No worries! My first instructable many years ago looked very similar, and someone gave me the same basic suggestion.

I've dabbled in scratch-building rc places, so this really piqued my interest. Looking forward to seeing the details :. By osoba95 Follow. More by the author:. Print the parts you need, assembly them together and glue. I used the epoxy, and it is perfect.

You will need: 3D printer epoxy wooden beams 3x3 mm balsa for ailerons. This early spell is when Sam Allardyce usually has a big effect on results, but I think Liverpool might alter that statistic on this occasion. Media playback is not supported on this deviceBecause of their Europa League tie on Thursday, Allardyce will not have had much time to train with his squad, Everton ship a lot of goals and boy do Liverpool like scoring them at the moment.

The Reds record in front of goal is just staggering, as is the amount of chances they are creating at the moment too,It will not be one-way traffic - it is a derby, and I know what kind of games they are - but even if it is a lot tighter, I cannot see Liverpool making lots of chances without taking a couple of them.

Richard's prediction: I think this will be a cracking game - they always seem to be - and I think there will be a few goals. I am backing Liverpool to win it, because they are at home. I just think United have hit a run of form, and their win at Arsenal last week was very comfortable and impressive. If Kompany is missing, that will give United more opportunities from set-pieces and, although City will create plenty of chances themselves, David de Gea is obviously in such fine form in goal for Jose Mourinho's side.

The key will be what Mourinho tries tactically. You know he will have a plan, and he will have had a team in mind for the past three or four matches too. So Pogba's suspension is a blow for him as far as that is concerned, but I just have a feeling Hubnet uk will go and beat City, in not a particularly good game.

Richard's prediction: City look absolutely unstoppable - what a pleasure it has been watching them this season. If anyone can stop them, it's Jose Mourinho, but I don't think that he can. He beat comedian Nish Kumar who got six correct results, but with no perfect scores, giving him 60 points.

Bodyline, a "heart-stopping" win and Mitchell Johnson's pace assault - what is the most memorable moment from England's Ashes tours.

Live on These aren't the games that matter for West Ham. Watford are really good away from home and Burnley haven't been as good at home, so you'd expect an away win, but I think Burnley will sneak this one. Burnley are just solid. They have had some really good results, so they are so hard to bet against. They are going to get it right at home soon. They are right in it now, and a win here will really help them out.

Brighton 1-5 Liverpool Brighton 1-5 Liverpool Bournemouth won't be able to cope with Wilfried Zaha. They can attack at will, but sometimes when quality players get at them, they really can struggle.

It will be a really good game, as both teams will have a go. Such a hard one to call. I have seen Huddersfield a few times this season. They have got some amazing results, and all credit to the manager for setting them up to win those games.
